SocialAI Research Group

Our mission.

Who we are.

SocialAI develops biologically-inspired and plausible, multi-level AI multi-agent neural network models to explore critical aspects of social behaviour.

What we do.

We combine cutting-edge machine-learning tools with innovative research into fundamental psychological mechanisms and a deep, historically-grounded understanding of complex societal dynamics.

Our primary aim is to illuminate the cognitive processes that enable people to navigate fundamental aspects of cooperation and competition within and between social groups – from learning about our environments to developing roles within groups and successfully predicting others’ behaviours to navigating the tensions that can undermine social function and stability.

How do we do it?

SocialAI develops computational models that integrate the framework of artificial intelligence with cutting-edge, multi-level approaches from neuroscience, psychology, sociology, history, and cultural anthropology.

Using our Gem software, we integrate traditional research methods (MRI, behavioural experiments) with multi-agent networks in complex environments, bringing in theoretical and empirical insights from across the social sciences to explore critical questions surrounding social cognition, perception and behaviour.

Why does our work matter?

SocialAI seeks to advance AI design and promote applications that foster fair, safe, and responsible human behaviours and structures. Our research not only advances basic science but carries practical applications for promoting collaboration and reducing bias at varying social scales, helping us understand the past better while boosting our ability to navigate the pressing challenges facing us in the future.
